Fire or Explosion Emergencies

  1. Alert people in your laboratory or immediate area to the fire. Evacuate the laboratory.
  2. Have someone pull the FIRE ALARM. This is a LOCAL SIGNAL only and does not automatically call the Fire Department. Call 911 as soon as possible.
  3. If the fire is of known material, small in size, and you have been trained to use a fire extinguisher, an attempt to put the fire out can be made.  Only attempt to use a fire extinguisher if you can safely escape at any time. If the material burning is unknown to you, do not attempt to use the extinguisher.
  4. If possible, close hood sashes and doors while evacuating to contain the fire.
  5. A person with clothing on fire should be drenched under the safety shower located at exit of each lab. Afterward, wrap the person in a blanket to protect against shock.
  6. Do not use elevators to leave the building.
  7. Wait for the Fire Department on Bill Edwards Drive. Provide as much information as possible. Wittenberg Emergency Response Procedure for Fire
  8. Do not re-enter building until Fire Department gives "all-clear" signal.
