The Learning Experience

The Master of Arts in Education degree offers two tracks, the leadership track and the reading track. Both tracks involve the same core and research-based classes and culminate in a research thesis or project. The leadership track is geared towards those who want to pursue administrative roles in education, including those who want to obtain principal licensure. The reading track is geared toward those who are committed to supporting students’ reading development in a range of capacities, and is ideal for those who have already completed their Reading Endorsement. As an MA in Education student, you will network with classmates and faculty and learn new skills and insights through:

  • Synchronous and Asynchronous discussions
  • Hands-on research
  • Team projects
  • Highly experienced faculty

Requirements

Principal licensure is an additional accreditation geared towards experienced educators interested in the administrative side of education. Those who wish to pursue the principal licensure have multiple pathways. If you already have a Master’s degree and would like to simply add licensure, you can transfer in the required leadership courses and complete two additional principal licensure courses. If you have not completed the required leadership courses, we offer those as an option separate from Wittenberg’s Master’s degree.

If you do not yet have a Master’s degree, the two principal licensure courses can be completed at the conclusion of the Wittenberg Master’s of Arts in Education degree. Students selecting this option should complete the Master’s degree with a leadership focus.

NOTE: Principal licensure requires a Master’s degree, a current professional teaching license and at least two years of experience as a classroom teacher. Alternatively, candidates could hold a Master’s degree, professional pupil services license, and two years of related work experience. All licenses and work experience should be in the same grade band for which you pursue principal licensure.

Enhance your credentials! Complete your Reading Endorsement coursework this summer!

This program is designed for licensed teachers who wish to add the Ohio Reading Endorsement to their current teaching license. The focus of this program is to address the “Ohio Plan to Raise Literacy Achievements.” Wittenberg’s program is designed so students can complete the academic coursework online in one summer with a culminating 45-hour practicum to be completed in your own classroom during fall semester. All courses are offered at the graduate level.

Pre-requisites:

The state of Ohio and Wittenberg University mandate the following prerequisites:

  • Ohio 12-hr Reading Core;
  • Transfer in at least a 3-credit Phonics course or pass a Phonics Mastery Assessment;
  • Have completed a teacher education program or related program from an institution accredited at the state and regional level;
  • Have attained a baccalaureate cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher on a 4-point scale

This endorsement can be completed in one year and is open to any educator who has already completed a master’s degree in education. Completing this endorsement will prepare you to serve as a teacher leader both formally and informally in your school and district. It will allow you to support the development of new teachers, lead school improvement initiatives, assist school administrators with professional development activities and attend to other leadership needs within the school. The Teacher Leader Endorsement will also help you qualify for the Lead Professional Educators License, the highest qualification on Ohio's highest four-tiered licensure structure.
