Ryan Maurer joined the staff at Wittenberg University in July 2000. He was responsible for directing and overseeing the university's sports information & athletics communications operations, including all athletics department news, publicity and promotional efforts, for nearly 16 years before moving over to his current position in May 2016.
As Senior Writer & Web Content Specialist, Maurer is involved in the university's media relations and public relations activities, and he manages all content that appears on the Wittenberg website.
Maurer has served as an advisor to the Integrated Media Corps (IMC), a unique co-curricular program designed for students preparing to enter the field of multimedia production, operated in collaboration between the university's academic Department of Communications and administrative Office of University Communications. Students participating in the program have served as the production staff for Tiger Sports Network broadcasts and work in a variety of roles in the Office of University Communications. In 2014, the IMC was named a "Program of Excellence" by the Ohio Communication Association.
A 1994 graduate of Miami University, Maurer holds a B.A. in English Literature/Journalism, as well as a master's degree in education from Cleveland State University. He started his career as a sports writer, first with Suburban News Publications in Columbus, Ohio, and later with The Daily Record in Wooster, Ohio. After earning his master's degree while spending a year as a graduate assistant in Cleveland State's sports information office, Maurer spent nearly two years as a writer and editor at Spectrum Publications in Orrville, Ohio.
In 1995, Maurer earned a pair of awards for sports writing from the Society of Professional Journalists. He also was recognized in 2007 and 2008 by the American Volleyball Coaches Association as the Great Lakes Region recipient of the Grant Burger Award.
Maurer lives in Springfield with his wife, Heather, and their sons, Joshua and Justin.
