SPRINGFIELD, Ohio — Members of Wittenberg’s faculty can be found in the classroom, in the laboratory and on the front lawn at the Springfield Museum of Art during the Springfield Symphony Orchestra’s annual Lunch on the Lawn series. The free concerts, scheduled from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., began Friday, July 28, and will continue Friday, Aug. 4, 11 and 18. Two of the remaining concerts will include current Wittenberg faculty members, and one concert will include a Wittenberg University alumna.
On Aug. 4, Adjunct Instructor for Percussion Mark Smarelli, vibraphone, plays with the jazz group Good Vibes, a pun on the mallet instrument he plays. The group, which includes Chuck Young, guitar, John Dessinger, drums, Jim Bonecutter, bass, and Smarelli, has been together for more than a decade and can be expected to play some jazz standards, pop tunes and Latin-style selections.
Wittenberg alumna Barbara Garrett, class of 1997, violin, plays with the Seraphim String Quartet. The ensemble will perform classical repertoire on Aug. 11.
Triple Bond, Wittenberg’s faculty woodwind trio with Associate Professor of Chemistry and Department Chair Kristin Cline, flute, Associate Professor of Biology and Directory of Biochemistry/Molecular Biology Margaret Goodman, bassoon, and Adjunct Instructor for Clarinet and Chamber Music and Coordinator of Chemistry Labs Richard York, will perform Aug. 18.
Named to reflect the members’ shared love of the study of molecules and the importance of a strong bond of camaraderie and communications in a chamber music ensemble, Triple Bond will perform pieces written for them by former Wittenberg professor Steve Winteregg and current Visiting Assistant Professor of Music James Croson. Winteregg’s piece is called Atoms and Molecules and Croson’s piece is titled Trio for Flute, Clarinet and Bassoon.
Most of the original music for the wind trio is from the 20th and 21st centuries, but the group plays several arrangements of older classics, including compositions by Mozart, Beethoven, Vivaldi and Bach.
