Wittenberg Launches First-Ever Leadership Academy For High School Students
SPRINGFIELD, Ohio – Committed to developing future leaders, Wittenberg University announces the first-ever President’s Leadership Academy and related admission immersion experience, July 20-25. Created for high school students entering 11th and 12th grades, the President’s Leadership Academy is a residential experience that will assist high school students in not only navigating the admission process by discovering how to to discuss their leadership experiences in college applications and essays, but also how to grow their own leadership skills to benefit their schools, churches, and communities.
Online registration is available at www.wittenberg.edu/pla, and participants are eligible to receive a $1,000 scholarship should they apply and be accepted to Wittenberg in the future. Participants who take the skills they learn from Wittenberg’s leadership academy and who then go on to institute a positive program in their respective locations will also have the opportunity to compete for the new four-year, $80,000 President’s Leadership Scholarship, should they apply and be admitted to Wittenberg.
Wittenberg’s own president, Laurie M. Joyner, is hosting the Academy and will also share her insight on what leadership means in a special course during the week. Learning outcomes include: Identifying one’s own leadership style; managing controversy with civility; understanding servant leadership; integrating mission, purpose, and civic responsibility into one’s efforts; leading groups through strategic goal-setting and planning exercises; and finding mentors and networks.
As part of the President’s Leadership Academy, participants will spend time daily learning the ins-and-outs of college admission processes as well as tools to writing admission essays and conveying leadership opportunities as a way to stand out during admission and scholarship decisions.
“The President’s Leadership Academy is a one-of-a-kind immersion experience that builds on Wittenberg’s tradition of academic excellence, service, and leadership development,” said Jon Duraj, associate dean of students for student success.
Space is limited, and the cost is $800 for the week, which includes housing and all meals and social events. To learn more, visit www.wittenberg.edu/pla or contact Jon Duraj at 937-327-7800.
