Karleen Materne is just beginning her instructional journey at Wittenberg. She will be teaching the Art Methods class this fall. A Cleveland native, Karleen has spent her entire 29 year teaching career in the Dayton area. In addition to being an art teacher at Yellow Springs High School and McKinney Middle School, she is also a professional artist having had her work featured in restaurants, offices and homes across the country. Karleen’s mural work can be seen in schools, churches and community organizations throughout the city.

A former musician, Karleen changed her major to fine arts education and graduated from Bowling Green State University in 1989 with a B.S. in Art Education with an emphasis in Fibers, Painting, and Sculpture. She has a M.Ed in Teacher Leadership from the American College of Education and will be Career Tech licensed in 2021.

Karleen enjoys creating faux finishes on walls, working with concrete and fibers, but her greatest joy comes from her family. Her husband is a retired English/German teacher. They have two sons: a Music Composition/Education graduate student at BGSU and a dance performance major at the University of Oklahoma.
