Knowing that active, engaged learning fosters critical thinking that identifies problems and produces solutions, Wittenberg’s Department of Mathematics challenges students to obtain sophisticated theoretical knowledge and problem solving skills that resolve real-world issues.

Students in the department of mathematics are able to specialize in one of three tracks: pure math, applied math or statistics. The pure math track prepares students for abstract thinking necessary for teaching, graduate school or professional mathematics, and the applied math gives students specific skills to solve problems using technology needed for jobs in industry. Students interested in jobs or grad school in statistics or actuarial science can major in math and specialize on the Statistics Track, through which students learn how to use quantitative analysis to gain insight from data for solving real-life problems. Students majoring in other fields can pursue a Statistics Minor so that they can apply powerful stat concepts, methods and techniques to analyze information from work in their field.

The department of mathematics works in conjunction with the departments of computer science and statistics, allowing students to add breadth to their major and providing for cross-disciplinary research opportunities. Through close interaction with distinguished faculty, students in the department of mathematics are well trained in critical and logical thinking, which is central to an understanding of the natural sciences and figures prominently in many of the social sciences. Mathematics provides an excellent preparation for any career field— technical or not.

The department of mathematics is proud to be associated with the Bullock Math Academy, which reaches out to local middle school students to make them aware of the beauty of mathematics.

Mathematics majors pursuing a career in secondary education in math and science may be eligible for the Robert C. Noyce Scholarship.
