Springfield, Ohio – April is National Poetry Month, and those in the Miami Valley who love to read, write and listen to poetry are invited to celebrate with Wittenberg University Professor Emeritus of English, and host of WYSO Radio’s “Conrad’s Corner,” Conrad Balliet. Balliet and several local poets will gather at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 9, in the Main Library Auditorium, of the Dayton Metro Library, 215 E. Third St. The program is free and open to the public.
Balliet retired from the classroom in 1992, after teaching courses at Wittenberg on Victorian literature and Irish writers Yeats and Joyce. For the last 19 years he has continued to share his love of poets and poetry on National Public Radio station WYSO 91.3-FM, based in Yellow Springs, Ohio.
During the program, Balliet will talk about his radio show and poetry – what makes good poetry. Local published poets Robert Brimm, Julie Moore, and Cathy Essinger will join others in sharing their work, and audience members will also be afforded time to read some of their original work.
“I’m not much of a poet. (I) seldom write any, and none of the quality of most of those who read.” Balliet said of the poets he expects to read at the event.
A sign-up sheet will be available at the event for those who want to read from their own original works during an open mic following the scheduled readings. Balliet will follow a three-minute limit again this year to provide the opportunity for all who would like to participate. For more information, call the Dayton Metro Library at 937-463-2665.
