COVID-19: Residence Life FAQs

Given the decision to extend remote instruction through the remainder of the semester, we are asking all residents to make arrangements for off-campus housing for their health and safety and that of our community.

Last update: May 1, 2020

Students in campus housing were asked to make immediate arrangements to return to their permanent residence or other off-campus housing option on March 18. Anyone needing more time to make those arrangements was required to submit a Housing Extension Request. Approvals were limited as it was in the best interest of our campus community and the surrounding Springfield area that all students returned to their homes at that time. Any approvals to remain on campus prior to March 18 were no longer in effect as of March 20 and students were required to reapply and receive new approval to stay beyond March 20.

Any student neeing to make arrangements to gather belongings for the reminder of the semester, was asked to sign up for a time at Moveout Sign Up.

Frequently Asked Questions

When do I need be moved out?

Students and families should make arrangements to move out as soon as possible within their particular circumstances. We understand that making such arrangements is not easy for all. If you need additional time to complete a full move out, please know the sign-ups times will be available throughout the rest of the spring semester. Students should sign-up at Moveout Sign Up for a moveout time to help us reduce overlap and maintain social distancing. All moveouts need to be completed by May 17. Any occupancy after that date would be considered summer housing and carry those related charges. Full move-out instructions are available at: Move-Out Information.

Will my stuff be safe if I leave it on campus until later?

We are taking the necessary steps to maintain a community watch presence throughout campus housing. If you are unable to complete a move-out now, please still make arrangements to remove any belongings that you consider valuable (for any reason).

Can someone else pick up my stuff for me?

If you need to have someone else retrieve belongings for you, please note that name and contact info on your Moveout Sign Up.

I have personal belongings or equipment somewhere else on campus. How can I pick those things up at the same time?

Please let us know where else you need access to on campus to retrieve personal belongings or equipment. Please note that information on your Moveout Sign Up.

I need help with moving my belongings. What should I do?

Unfortunately, our staff does not have the ability to assist with packing or moving of belongings, nor do we have the ability to provide moving boxes, dollies, or carts. Some resources available to students to assist with moving or storing of items include:

  • We have made arrangements with Dorm Room Movers to offer free pick-up dates throughout the remainder of the semester so that you have time to coordinate the packing of your belongings and then utilize their service to do the actual move/storage. Please know there is a fee associated with this service; the University is not responsible for any costs associated with this service nor do we receive any commission from use of this service.
  • U-Haul has offered 30-days free self-storage for college students affected by the COVID-19 outbreak. There is an excellent U-Haul storage facility in town, just blocks from campus at: 802 W. Columbia St. Springfield, OH 45504. There are multiple U-Haul rental locations in town as well. Please know there is a fee associated with this service; the University is not responsible for any costs associated with this service nor do we receive any commission from use of this service.

I need permission to stay on campus for the remainder of Spring term. What do I do?

Anyone with an extreme need to live on campus for any period of time between March 20 and May 17 must request permission to do so no later than 8am Friday, March 20, by completing the form available here: Housing Extension Request. Please understand approvals will be severely limited as it is in the best interest of our campus community and the surrounding Springfield area that all students return to/stay at their homes at this time. Please also understand that any prior requests to remain on campus are no longer in effect; you must reapply and receive new approval. Students approved to stay on campus may be required to move to consolidate housing and are subject to any measures we need to put in place for the safety of the community.

What if I signed up for a move out time that no longer works for me? What if the only sign up times available do not work for me?

Only students who are signed up for their move out time are approved on campus. If you need to come at a different time, please email with your request to come at a different time to be approved.

Will I receive a refund of housing or meal plan charges for the remainder of the term?

Students received an email from the Office of the President on April 30 announcing the room and board pro-rated credit option. Residence Life sent a follow-up email shortly after to students with University housing or meals with instructions on how to request the pro-rated credit. A majority of students will receive a prorated refund or creit based on the date of March 15. If a student requested and was approved to continue residing on campus beyond March 15, the prorated credit will be modified based on the latter date. No credits will be processed until a student signs the release acknowledgement and moves all of their belongings out of their University residence.

What about library books, book rentals, book buybacks, etc? What about mail?

Please know we are addressing as many of these questions on the Wittenberg COVID-19 FAQ page and the Residence Life page as quickly as we can. If you need to return things on campus, please bring those with you when you return to complete your move out or remember to set them aside for return as you pack up your room.

What if I have other questions?

Please let us know! While we will not be on campus in our offices, we are still working remotely. We are here to assist you in whatever way we can. You can reach us at and you can follow our @WittResLife social media channels on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. Keep in mind that the Wittenberg COVID-19 FAQ page will be updated throughout the semester as new information develops.
