AbstractThis study explored the potential benefits of implementing a dance program in a youth residential treatment facility. Nine adolescent females living on the residential facility were selected to be part of the dance program. The Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale (RSES), the Body Dissatisfaction subscale of the Eating Disorder Inventory-II (EDI-II), and the Brief Mood Introspection Scale (BMIS) were administered at baseline and after the final dance session. The BMIS was also administered before and after each dance session. The dance program had marginally significant effects on weekly positive changes in overall mood as well as the specific moods of happy, content, fed up and sad. No influence of the dance program on self-esteem and body image satisfaction was evident. Future research is needed with a larger sample and control group.
