AbstractThis study explores how the male characters in Murakami Haruki’s Colorless Tazaki Tsukuru and His Years of Pilgrimage and Men Without Women experience mind-and-body separations that disallow them to face their true selves. Male characters in both novels are pushed to pursue both a physical and internal journey in order to understand the emotional blockage within themselves that has been caused by some kind of trauma or heartbreak. The characters are taken through several journeys in order for them to find the “nanika,” or “something” within themselves, usually grief, pain, and/ or loss that is holding them back from accepting reality.
