Testing & Protocols

Wittenberg University has a developed this protocol to respond to students, employees, contractors, and volunteers who show symptoms of COVID-19, have tested positive for COVID-19, or when an unvaccinated individual has been directly exposed to an individual that tested positive for COVID-19.

We follow guidance from the Ohio Department of Health (ODH), Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and the Clark County Combined Health District (CCCHD).

Student, Employee, Contractor or Volunteer Tests Positive for COVID-19 – Applies to Vaccinated and Unvaccinated Individuals

Step 1: Students Notify the Dean of Students at deanofstudents@wittenberg.edu. Employees, Contractors and Volunteers Notify the Director of Human Resources at walterm@wittenberg.edu.

Step 2: Individual who tested positive for the COVID virus with symptoms will remain in isolation until:

  • 3 days with no fever AND
  • Symptoms are improved AND
  • At least 10 days have passed since symptoms first appeared.

Individual who tested positive and had no symptoms will remain in isolation until:

  • 10 days have passed since the positive test and continues to have no symptoms.

Students can isolate at home or in Wittenberg designated isolation space. For non-residential students, including those students in privately-owned fraternity or sorority houses, Wittenberg will provide designated isolation space, if needed. If employees, contractors, or volunteers need assistance with isolation space, please contact Human Resources.

Step 3: The Dean of Students (or designee) or Director of Human Resources will work with CCCHD and Wittenberg COVID Response Team (CRT) to initiate contact tracing protocol if appropriate.

Step 4: Once an individual has met applicable symptom free benchmarks, they should obtain a release from CCCHD to emerge from isolation requirements. Student, employee, contractor of volunteer will be cleared to return to in-person campus operations with approval from the Dean of Students’ Office or the Director of Human Resources, in consultation with CCCHD, when applicable.

Student, Employee, Contractor or Volunteer Develops Symptoms of COVID-19 – Applies to Vaccinated and Unvaccinated Individuals

Step 1: Any Student, Employee, Contractor or Volunteer who has symptoms of COVID-19 must get tested for COVID-19.  Students can call Wittenberg Health Clinic, 937-327-7811 for a consultation. Our team at the Wittenberg Health Clinic is comprised of staff from Mercy Health Springfield. This phone consultation is FREE and available to students. Wittenberg students can use their insurance or self-pay at the Wittenberg Health Clinic; but we want to emphasize that a phone consultation for COVID-19 is FREE.

Step 2: Individuals must quarantine until test results return. Students can quarantine at home or in Wittenberg designated space. For non-residential students, including those students in privately-owned fraternity or sorority houses, Wittenberg will provide designated isolation space, if needed. If test results are negative, individuals can resume day-to-day activities. If test results are positive, the individual with symptoms will remain in isolation until:

  • 3 days with no fever AND
  • Symptoms are improved AND
  • At least 10 days have passed since symptoms first appeared.

Step 3: The Dean of Students (or designee) or Director of Human Resources will work with CCCHD and Wittenberg COVID Response Team (CRT) to initiate contact tracing protocol, if appropriate.

Unvaccinated Student, Employee, Contractor or Volunteer is Directly Exposed to Someone with COVID-19

Step 1: Students Notify the Dean of Students at deanofstudents@wittenberg.edu. Employees, Contractors or Volunteers Notify the Director of Human Resources at walterm@wittenberg.edu.

Step 2: Individual will quarantine for 10 days if they continue to have no symptoms.

Step 3: If an individual symptoms, the person will quarantine for 14 days and will be cleared return to in-person campus operations with approval from the Dean of Students’ Office or the Director of Human Resources, in consultation with CCCHD, when applicable.

Vaccinated Student, Employee, Contractor or Volunteer is Directly Exposed to Someone with COVID-19

Step 1: Students Notify the Dean of Students at deanofstudents@wittenberg.edu. Employees, Contractors or Volunteers Notify the Director of Human Resources at walterm@wittenberg.edu.

Step 2: Individuals will wear a mask indoors for 14 days or until they receive a negative test.

Step 3: Individuals will undergo a COVID-19 test 3-5 days following exposure.

NOTE: Per CDC guidelines, fully vaccinated people can also refrain from quarantine following a known exposure if they remain asymptomatic.
