Wittenberg Athletics COVID-19 Resocialization Plan

Our current resocialization of sport plan breaks up our typical preseason into three separate 14-day phases, with Phase 1 at Wittenberg set to begin on Friday, August 7th, and ultimately culminating with the goal to begin fall competition the weekend of September 18-20.

While the details of each phase, as well as our competition schedule, are still being finalized, there are some important expectations we need from each of you before arriving to campus and when you arrive to campus. It is only through our collective vigilance with health and safety standards and compliance with the best recommendations from public health experts that we will be able to move through each phase successfully and be appropriately prepared to compete during this fall season.

Self-Monitoring and Public Health Expectations

  • 14 days prior to your campus move-in day we ask that you consider a self-quarantine. We know that this may not be possible for many of you, but we are asking that all of you strongly consider every interaction that you are planning or that you may encounter in the two weeks prior to arrival and to do everything you can to reduce your exposure to unknown or high-risk places and people.  
  • During this two-week period prior to your arrival, each of you will be expected to closely self-monitor for symptoms of COVID-19, and we expect that when you arrive to campus you are not displaying any of these symptoms:
    • Fever (99.9 or above)
    • Cough
    • Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing
    • Fatigue
    • Muscle or body aches
    • Headache
    • New loss of taste or smell
    • Sore throat
    • Congestion or runny nose
    • Nausea or vomiting
    • Diarrhea
  • Should you personally test positive for COVID-19, come in close contact with someone who has tested positive OR are experiencing any of the symptoms at any time between now and when you are scheduled to return to campus, you should contact your head coach immediately who will inform your athletic trainer. Each of these scenarios will be handled on a case-by-case basis to determine the best possible return plan to the campus and your team and there is a protocol that we have established that we will follow.
  • We expect that you will adhere to the recommendations of public health officials and practice good hygiene, wear masks indoors and outdoors when social distancing is not possible, maintain social distancing, and be extremely honest and transparent with yourself and medical professionals about any potential symptoms you may be experiencing, both before you arrive to campus and while you are on campus.

Campus Move-in Procedures

Each of you will be receiving an email from Residence Life that walks your through the sign-up process for your move-in to campus.  Please note, the early-arrival fall sport teams include men’s and women’s cross country, field hockey, football, men’s & women’s soccer and women’s volleyball. Men’s & women’s golf, along with men’s and women’s tennis student-athletes will follow the same process for move-in as the general student body.

NOTE – YOU MUST FILL OUT THE MOVE-IN SURVEY FOR YOUR SCHEDULED ARRIVAL DATE TO CAMPUS IMMEDIATELY AS THE SURVEY WILL ONLY BE OPEN TO EARLY REPORTING STUDENT-ATHLETES FOR A LIMITED TIME BEFORE IT IS RELEASED AND OPENED UP TO THE GENERAL STUDENT BODY.

Sunday, August 2

  • Field Hockey – Full Team
  • Women’s Volleyball - Returners
  • Women’s Soccer – Returners

Monday, August 3

  • Half of Football Returners – First half of Alphabet (Bryce Anderson – Logan Lange)

Tuesday, August 4

  • Half of Football Returners – Second half of Alphabet (Justin Maynard – Max Yost)

Wednesday, August 5

  • Men’s & Women’s Cross Country – Returners
  • Men’s Soccer – Returners
  • Football – 1/3 of the incoming class as assigned by your coaching staff

Thursday, August 6

  • Women’s Soccer – Incoming Class
  • Men’s Soccer – Incoming Class
  • Football - 1/3 of the incoming class as assigned by your coaching staff

Friday, August 7

  • Football - 1/3 of the incoming class as assigned by your coaching staff
  • Women’s Volleyball – Incoming Class
  • Men’s & Women’s Cross Country – Incoming Class

Athletic Training/Medical Screening Reminders

  • For all incoming student-athletes, please complete the incoming student-athlete packet that you all should have received and return by Monday, July 13. If you have any concerns or delays, please contact ecrosbie@wittenberg.edu to alert our department. We will help you with the process.
  • For returning student-athletes, if you have not completed the Sports Ware screening process with your athletic trainer, please contact them ASAP for completion.   
  • For all student-athletes, upon arrival, you will be assigned a specific time to report to the sports medicine department to complete our screening process. More information will be sent to your Wittenberg email as we get closer to the date of arrival. This screening will include additional questions and assessments relative to COVID-19.

Pre-Arrival Educational Module

During the week of July 27, we will be sending out another email that will include a series of presentations through Moodle for you and your family to view regarding our expectations for each of you, educational materials relative to COVID-19 and more specific plans relative to our athletic experience this fall.  

NOTE - These educational modules will be a requirement to view and an attestation document will be required before you will be allowed to check-in to campus on your move-in date.

Video Conference Q/A with Administration

On Tuesday, July 21, and again on Thursday, July 23, at 7 p.m. the Athletic Department Administrative Team will offer a Video Conference Q&A Session for any fall sport student-athlete and/or their family members to address any questions or concerns related to our fall preparations. Specific information on these sessions will be emailed to all fall sport student-athletes by Friday, July 17.

Again, we thank you for your patience and continued dedication to Wittenberg University and Wittenberg Athletics. As you can imagine, much has changed and continues to change on daily basis, and we will continue to do our best to communicate with every step of the way.  Each week leading up to the start of the semester, you will receive from Wittenberg an update with regards to our campus plans, there is a dedicated website (www.wittenberg.edu/together) that will continuously be updated, and if you or your family have any questions or concerns related to our plans relative to COVID, you can email us at covid@wittenberg.edu.
