Department of Art & Art History
Believing that active, engaged learning fosters creative thinking, problem solving and expression, Wittenberg’s Department of Art delivers comprehensive art training within a liberal arts tradition, preparing students for success in today’s competitive art environment.
Students in the department of art can choose among concentrations in Art History, Painting, Drawing, Ceramics, Sculpture, Silver Jewelry, Photography and Digital Imaging, Printmaking, and Graphic Design.
Students work closely with faculty--practicing artists and historians-- in a highly personal environment, and small class sizes ensure that faculty can help students reach their creative, intellectual, and technical potential. The nurturing environment enables students to discover which area most interests them, and each student’s personal aesthetic and intellectual engagement is strengthened by close interaction with faculty.
Innovation, experimentation and critical inquiry are essential for all students studying art, and students in Studio Art utilize these tools in to create a professional portfolio, while students in Art History present senior thesis work at competitive national conferences.
Students have gone on to careers as gallery directors, museum curators, children’s book illustrators, and have worked with Dreamworks Productions, Jean-Michel Cousteau’s Ocean Adventures, Bower Design and Twinrocker Paper Mill.
