Trying to navigate online discourse or just curious about the roots of First Amendment debates? A interdisciplinary discussion at Wittenberg University looks to provide a framework for understanding one of democracy's most contested principles.
A timely discussion on media and freedom of speech will take place on Monday, Nov. 17, from 5 to 6:30 p.m. at Founder’s Pub, located on the basement level of the Benham-Pence Student Center.
Open to the public, the panel brings together experts in political science, philosophy, history, and communication to explore how to think about free expression in an era of social media, misinformation, and heated public debates.
Serving on the panel will be five Wittenberg faculty members, including Julius Bailey, professor of philosophy, the Pre-Law Advisor, and director of African & Diaspora Studies and Justice, Law & Public Policy; Kelly Dillon, associate professor of communication and digital media; Staci Rhine, professor of political science, specializing in American politics, American political behavior, and mass media; Thomas Taylor, professor of history, specializing in early U.S. history and public history; and Ross Jackson, associate professor of business and economics and program director of M.S. in Analytics Management, who will also serve as the moderator.
From historical foundations of free speech principles to modern questions about platform governance and misinformation, panelists will explore how evolving media technologies reshape democratic discourse to examine contemporary challenges to free expression. This discussion promises diverse perspectives on an issue that affects all citizens and participants in public debate. Attendees are encouraged to ask questions. Light refreshments will be available during the event.
