Statement On Anti-Asian Hate

Publication Date: March 19, 2021

Wittenberg Community,

In light of the recent tragedy in Atlanta, we at Wittenberg University are concerned about the appalling rise in anti-Asian hate, bias, racism and crime occurring across our country, which has been amplified by racist responses to the COVID-19 pandemic. At Wittenberg, we support and stand with the Asian, Asian-American, and Pacific Islander (AAPI) community and people of Asian descent. We vehemently condemn the violence and harassment experienced by the AAPI community. We have joined other institutions across the country and lowered our flags to half-mast in respect of the victims and those affected by the violence.

Our AAPI students, faculty, and staff are important members of our community. We need to continue to work together to truly make Wittenberg a welcoming and equitable community where no one experiences racism or discrimination of any kind.

Students, faculty, and staff who would like to discuss concerns, seek support, or report a bias incident, please know there are resources available through the Dean of Students office and Human Resources. Our Counseling Center and Pastor’s Office are also here for support. Additionally, Wittenberg offers numerous online support options including Talkspace and Talk-one-2-one. Please do not hesitate to reach out as you may need.

Regards,

Michael Frandsen
University President
