Honoring his legacy

Wittenberg partnering with Springfield City Schools for annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service

Wittenberg University is partnering with Springfield City Schools for the ninth year in a row to host the Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service 2019 on Saturday, Jan. 26, from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at YOUmedia Springfield, located at 700 S. Limestone Street in Springfield.

The MLK Jr. Day of Service was organized by Wittenberg's Community Service Program in the Susan Hirt Hagen Center for Civic and Urban Engagement as part of the national Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service, a federal holiday set aside to honor the memory of King through service.

Led by Wittenberg students, there will be approximately 30 Hayward and Roosevelt Middle School children participating in a day of activities focused on Martin Luther King Jr.'s message of legacy. The participants will be involved in games and artistic and educational activities throughout the day.

“A day of service that is centered around faith in action and has a much more important meaning today than it has in a long time,” said Caroline Warner, who is co-coordinating the event with Kenzie Hill. Warner, from Columbus, Ohio, is a junior exercise science major. Hill, from Zanesville, Ohio, is a junior political science and communication double major.

"We hope the Wittenberg students and middle school students who are involved in this event can strengthen their confidence to have faith in themselves to create positive changes in the community. MLK Jr. certainly was a shining example of how to have hope, belief and faith in others around you," Warner added.
