Through the Looking Glass

Annual Wittenberg Guild Scholarship Style Show Slated for May 19

“Through the Looking Glass” will be the theme of the 62nd annual Scholarship Style Show, presented by the Wittenberg Guild on Saturday, May 19, in the Center Dining Room of the Benham-Pence Student Center at Wittenberg University.

Reminiscent of Alice in Wonderland’s adventures through the magical mirror, “Through the Looking Glass,” looks to inspire guests to wear anything fun or funky.

This year's show will also feature summer fashions for men and women of all ages and sizes, courtesy of One-Eleven Fashion Boutique, WildFlower and Guild Gallery. Mallia Salon and Day Spa will treat those volunteering as models to professional hair and make-up for the show.

Chaired by Lehan Peters, Wittenberg class of 2003, the event will begin with a social hour and silent auction starting at 10 a.m. followed by the brunch and style show at 11:30 a.m. Auction items were donated by members and friends of the Guild as well as local businesses. This year’s models include Wittenberg President Mike Frandsen, Sharon Frandsen, Kate Frandsen, Baxter Frandsen, Melanie Wilt, Rob Rue, Sean Ross, Marcie Langford, Bonita Dover, Miranda Hesson, Debbie Summerfield, Kayla Hall ’19, Olivia Filhart, Kelcie Webster ’14 and Steven Newell. This year’s emcee is Amy McGuffey, assistant professor of education at Wittenberg.

"The style show is the centerpiece of the Guild's fundraising activities, and the planning committee is very excited for this year's event,” Peters said. “We're thrilled to highlight local boutiques, and our dynamic group of models are ready to showcase the latest trends. We're looking forward to another fantastic year."

During the event, the Wittenberg Guild will also be presenting the annual Elizabeth Woodhouse Award. Each year since 1997, the award has been presented to a member or members serving the Guild and the Springfield community. It is named after Woodhouse who was a dedicated Guild volunteer. Last year’s recipients were Pat Wickham and Pauline Chakeres.

The Wittenberg Guild is a women’s organization focused on promoting Wittenberg and utilizing its educational resources to enrich the local community, as well as awarding scholarships to students from Clark County who plan to attend the university. Through the years, the organization has raised more than $1 million to support scholarships, campus landscaping, sculptures and artwork for the student center, the renovation of the Ann Miller Gallery in Koch Hall and pianos for Krieg Hall.

Tickets sold in advance are $30 for adults and $15 for children 12 and under. Tickets sold at the show are $35 for adults and $18 for children 12 and under. Wittenberg faculty and staff members can attend for the reduced price of $25. Seating is limited to the first 250 people who register.

About the Guild
For more than 70 years, the Wittenberg Guild has supported Wittenberg through scholarships, campus landscaping, artwork and other fund-raising initiatives. Although many Guild members have no formal connection to Wittenberg, either as alumnae or employees, all share a deep desire to be advocates for the university in the community and to promote Wittenberg to prospective students. The Wittenberg Guild supports the community each winter when it kicks off the Wittenberg Guild Martha Rodgers Scholarship Campaign. To inspire local students to attend Wittenberg and ensure they have the resources to do so, the Guild has been raising scholarship monies to award to all local students who enroll at Wittenberg. Since 1990 the scholarship fund has raised more than $360,000 from the generous donations of its members and the Springfield-Clark County community at-large, which has in turn benefited hundreds of local students in attending Wittenberg.
