Indexes

Medline/Pubmed – We have Medline through two interfaces: Medline via EBSCO and through PubMed (via the National Library of Medicine). Students may be more comfortable with the EBSCO version as it’s a bit easier to search and they may be familiar with that interface having used other EBSCO databases like Academic Search Complete. This is the best place to look for articles dealing with medical research and clinical medicine.

Chemical Abstracts -- STNEasy
An easy-to-use online interface to the electronic equivalent of Chemical Abstracts. Database is maintained by the Chemical Abstracting Service. Use of STNEasy is limited to Wittenberg University students and faculty. It can be accessed in the Eastern Time Zone: 1:00 AM Sunday – 5:00 AM Monday; 5:00 PM – 5:00 AM the following day, Monday – Friday; 5:00 PM Friday – 10:00 PM Saturday. On the first Saturday of each month, STN is only available until 5:00 PM. Please contact a reference librarian or a member of the Chemistry department for a login ID and password.

BIOSIS Previews (Biological Abstracts)
Indexes journal articles on all topics of biology and medicine. Covers 1980 to present. Some full text available.

Web of Science -- Science Citation Index
will allow for cited reference searching. It will show you who has cited an article as well as who the article cites. BIOSIS Previews will also do this as they are both through Thomson Reuters and have the same basic interface.

Electronic Journal Center (OhioLINK)
Index to over 1500 full text journals, many in the sciences.

Google Scholar
– Fine for what it is. If you are going to use it, use the link above or have them go through the Thomas Library website list of all databases. This will direct you through our proxy server and will allow you to access any full-text that we might have access to that you find searching Google Scholar. This should automatically happen if you are on the campus network, but if you are off campus, Google won’t link to our full-text unless they go through the proxy server.

The vast majority of our databases should be available to all Wittenberg students, faculty and staff at anytime from anywhere. You will need to put in your name and barcode number (on the back of your ID or you can find it on MyWitt) to access resources off campus. The big exception to this rule is STNEasy which has limited hours of access as noted above.

All of the databases will have a “help” section somewhere to aid in searching. If anyone has any questions about any of these resources, please feel free to contact me. In addition, students may contact me to set up a Personal Research Consultation (PeRC) where I can sit down with an individual or group and work with them to find sources. Science - Recent issues are available in print on the first floor of Thomas Library. Issues older than 6 years can be found in JSTOR.

Nature – current access is the print copy located on the first floor of Thomas Library.

Use Journals the Library Has: Electronic & Print to find holdings of other periodicals. This is a searchable index of the periodicals Wittenberg owns in print and electronically. Location and dates owned are also provided.

Periodicals are where most of the information for your research papers will come. Remember that there are scholarly publications as well as popular publications. You will most likely want to stick to scholarly publications for your research. For hints on how to tell the two apart, please see Scholarly vs. Popular Articles.

If the journal you need isn't owned by or accessable electronically at Wittenberg, you will have to order the article through InterLibrary Loan (ILL). Fill out a blue ILL sheet at the Science Library or in the main library. You can also fill out Inter-Library Loan forms online. While there is no fee, articles sometimes take up to 10-14 days to come in so order early!

American Chemical Society - provides access to their journals, job bank, and other Chemistry sites on the Web.

WebElements Periodic Table This Periodic Table online by Mark Winter at the University of Sheffield, England. Find information on the elements by clicking on the table.

Webbook for Chemistry A mini-handbook of Chemistry. Includes tables, weights, formulas, structures and synonyms for substances. This site is produced by the National Institute of Standards and Technology.

There are many many web sites devoted to the topic of Chemistry -- some good and some bad. For hints on how to evaluate web sites, please see our Evaluating Web Sites guide. If you choose to include websites, you will need to cite them just as you need to site other sources of information. Take a look at our Citing Electronic Resources page for help. Be sure to cite all the resources that you need for your paper. Here's a link to our quick guide to citations.
