At Commencement, all Wittenberg University students receive an empty diploma cover as they cross the stage during the ceremony.
Students who have met all of their degree requirements that do not have any financial obligations to the University will be able to collect their diploma at the reception following the ceremony.
Students who finish their program in December or August will have their diplomas shipped to them, provided they have met all of their degree requirements and do not have any financial obligations to the University.
The diploma is 8.5” x 11” in size and is signed by the current President and Provost of Wittenberg University. When students apply for graduation, they submit how they would like their name to appear on the diploma. Ohio State law requires that the name listed be a student’s legal name or common nick name (click here for more information). This means we cannot include preferred names or nicknames on the diploma. If you’d like your name updated on your diploma, we must receive legal name change documentation. Contact registrar@wittenberg.edu to complete a name change request form.
See below for an example of the diploma:
Note that the diploma does not list majors. It lists the degree earned (“Bachelor of Arts”, “Bachelor of Science”, etc.). Majors are only listed on the student’s official transcript. We also report a student’s major programs of study to the National Student Clearinghouse, which many employers use for background checks.
Students with outstanding financial obligations should connect with Student Accounts if they have any questions about their balance.
Dual Degrees versus Double Majors
In order to receive more than one degree (and diploma), students must earn a major in two different degree types (e.g., a Bachelor of Arts and a Bachelor of Science), and they must complete at least 158 credits. If a student is a double major in two programs that are a Bachelor of Arts, they will receive one diploma. If you are a dual degree student (two separate degree programs, like a Bachelor of Arts and a Bachelor of Science), and have earned at least 158 credits, you would receive two degrees. See “GRADUATING WITH MORE THAN ONE MAJOR” and “GRADUATING WITH MORE THAN ONE DEGREE EARNED AT WITTENBERG UNIVERSITY” in the Academic Catalog for more information about graduating with more than one degree earned at Wittenberg University.
