Communication & Digital Media Major Requirements

In order to graduate with  a degree in Communication & Digital Media, students must complete a minimum of 40 credits total (usually 10 courses) and maintain a minimum GPA of 2.0 in the major.

NOTE: The following Communication & Digital Media Major requirements pertain to students who declared the major as of March 2020 or later.

I.  Foundations in Context and Theory (2 Required Courses)

  • CMDM 101: Introduction to Communication
  • CMDM 201: Communication Theory

II.  Intermediate Study (2 Elective Courses)

  • CMDM 202: Interpersonal Communication
  • CMDM 205: Media Literacy
  • CMDM 206: Reasoning and Communication

III.  Methodology (2 Required Courses)

  • CMDM 300: Social Scientific Methods
  • CMDM 301: Critical Methods

IV.  Advanced Seminars (2 Elective Courses)

  • CMDM 320: Topics in Communication and Culture (may be repeated for credit)
  • CMDM 322: Interpersonal Conflict
  • CMDM 323: Interpersonal Influence
  • CMDM 324: Family Communication
  • CMDM 325: Relational Communication
  • CMDM 327: Health Communication
  • CMDM 328: Intercultural Communication
  • CMDM 329: Nonverbal Communication
  • CMDM 330: Analysis of Persuasion
  • CMDM 350: Topics in Media (may be repeated for credit)
  • CMDM 351: Media Law
  • CMDM 360: Topics in Rhetoric (may be repeated for credit)
  • CMDM 361: Gender and Communication
  • CMDM 362: Political Rhetoric
  • CMDM 363: Environmental Communication

V.  Communication & Digital Media Elective

  • One additional CMDM course at the 100, 200 or 300 level that does not fulfill a previous requirement

VI.  Capstone (1 Required Course)

  • CMDM 403: Senior Seminar

VII. Optional

  • CMDM 490: Independent Study (with faculty approval)
  • CMDM 491: Internship (with faculty approval)
  • CMDM 495: Practicum (with faculty approval)
  • CMDM 499: Senior Honors Thesis or Project

In addition to completing the course requirements and maintaining the minimum required GPA of 2.0, students in the Communication & Digital Media major also are required to attend all departmental colloquia and fully adhere to and uphold the university's Honor Code.
