Travel Days and Safe on San Salvador

Editor's note:  We apologize for the delay in getting these first posts up.  We were having some internet issues at the Field Station and then Witt was doing site maintenance last night.  Also, pictures will be added asap... we're having an issue getting them uploaded but we'll get them there as soon as we can.

After a day of work at Wittenberg learning how to use a GPS unit, transect sampling, and how to take effective observations, the group set out early Tuesday morning for Nassau.

We had an uneventful trip, even with a quick turnaround in Charlotte, and made it to Nassau where we had taxis waiting to take us to the Orange Hill Beach Inn.  After a brief break, we gathered at the pool to learn and/or refresh snorkel skills. We played a bit in the water and then most of us walked across the street to the beautiful beach.  For some of us, it was even our first time seeing the ocean!  (pretty good first ocean view, huh?)  We had an awesome dinner and then spent the evening with some group building activities.

The next morning, we had a great breakfast and headed back to the airport to head to San Salvador.  We got there early and had time to wait and do a bit of shopping in the airport and then headed down to the plane, which we walked onto up its stairs.  It was an easy flight to San Salvador with spectacular views of the Exuma Cays and Eleuthera, among other islands.  We were met by the director of the Gerace Research Centre, and we piled all of our luggage (it all came!) onto our truck, climbed on, and made the 20 minute drive back to the station.  We had orientation, dinner, and a lecture about the history of San Salvador, and got some well-deserved rest after our trip down.

More adventures to come from the students…
