Frequently Asked Questions

What are the benefits of doing an internship?
  • Applied Learning: Chance to apply academic knowledge and skills within a work environment.
  • Soft Skill Development: Our community partners help students develop the soft skills necessary for succeeding in a professional environment.
  • Mentorship: Site supervisors provide professional development mentorship relevant to the academic interests of the student.
  • Compensation: Most local opportunities are paid, and typically at above minimum wage rates.
  • Academic Credit: Internships can receive academic credit if done with a faculty advisor who provides reflection opportunities for the student to think about how their internship experience relates to their academic coursework. Students must complete at least 35 hours of work for each academic credit.
Are internships paid?
Many internships are paid. However, it is up to the employer to decide to whether to pay and how much. These details will be listed as part of the internship listing on Handshake.
How do I find local internship opportunities?

We maintain a list of current local internship opportunities on Handshake. Once you complete the student interest form, we will give you access to positions on Handshake.

Can I get credit for my internship?

All internships are eligible for academic credit. However, not all internships work for everyone. There are two basic types of local internships:

  • Major/Minor internships: If you want your internship to count towards one of your programs, then you will need to work with your faculty advisor for that program. If they determine the internship work is appropriate to your course of study, then they will help devise learning goals with you for your experience.
  • Hagen Center internships: If your internship is with a nonprofit organization and does not apply directly to one of your major or minor programs, then the Hagen Center can supervise your internship using our civic engagement learning outcomes.

Once you have secured an internship, you can start the process of registering it for academic credit.

How many hours do I need to work to get academic credit?

You need to work at least 35 hours at your internship site for each academic credit. As an example, a 4-credit internship will require you to work 140 hours (35 x 4 = 140) at your internship site.

What if I don’t have a car to get to a job site?
