Sociology Honors & Awards

The Department of Sociology recognizes student achievements through several awards and honors.

First is invitation for membership in the International Sociology Honor Society, Alpha Kappa Delta. These invitations go to outstanding majors and minors in the department during their junior and senior years.

At the beginning of the year, the top students in the department are named Sociology Tutors. This designation both acknowledges the accomplishments of the tutors, and makes them available to assist other students taking courses in the department.

At the end of every year, the department honors the outstanding graduating major with the greatest potential to be a practitioner of the discipline of sociology or anthropology through the T. Edwin Boling Sociology Scholarship Award.

Some students may be awarded Departmental Honors in Sociology for completion of a successful Senior Honors Thesis. The honors thesis is an extensive research project that takes nearly a year to complete and ends in a professional quality paper. To be eligible for Departmental Honors, a student must have a 3.5 GPA.

The department also recognizes the Best Senior Thesis at a spring function.
