Illuminating The Holiday Season, Walking The Walk For Wittenberg

Yesterday was the last day of classes for the fall semester. Our students are now busy getting ready for finals and finishing up projects with their professors. We also just enjoyed two nights of our wonderful Lessons and Carols, which you can view here, and started a new campus tree lighting tradition earlier this week. On Sunday, we will support our students once again with our annual Midnight Breakfast, ensuring that they have sustenance and some fun in between their studies.

Global Connections Collaborative, A Great Way To End The Year

As I look at my calendar, I find myself amazed by how fast the year has flown by. Thanksgiving is less than two weeks away, and with it comes an incredible feeling of gratitude. Right now we stand at more than $88 million in our $100-million Having Light Campaign. To be at this level shows how much you care about our people, place, and present. We are so thankful for your support as it literally will change the lives of our current and future students, as well as advance the educational experience we provide.

Thanks for the Memories, Odd vs. Even Challenge, Holding Court

Fall break is already upon us at Wittenberg, and our first semester is moving swiftly. It is a much better time on campus than last year. There is more energy from the students because they are able to do more of the things they love to do. The regular fall sports schedule has resumed, as have concerts, plays, and the activities that draw our community together.

Remembering 9/11, Homecoming Countdown, Welcome to Class of 2025

Today, Wittenberg is joining the nation in observing the 20th Anniversary of September 11, 2001 with a reading and a moment of silence followed by the tolling of the Myers Bell at 8:46 a.m. – the time when the first plane struck the North Tower of the World Trade Center. The bell will toll for five minutes in sync with other bells from area churches around Springfield. Houses of worship around the nation have been encouraged to toll their bells at that time.

Homecoming Planning, Fundraising Success, Calling NYC Alumni

I always look forward to the start of fall semester, welcoming new students, and the renewal it brings. The energy is rising as students have begun to return. We start a new year celebrating crossing the $85 million threshold in our “Having Light” comprehensive campaign – one sign of your belief in Wittenberg and our future. Our financial results for the fiscal year that ended in June were also better than expected, though still a deficit. We have fewer students than we would like as has been the case at many institutions like us, but I have no doubt we will continue to provide outstanding opportunities for learning, growth, and change.

Vaccinations, Podcasts, Tailgates & More

In less than a week, we will kick off our New Student Orientation program, Destination Wittenberg. Every year, we provide several opportunities for our incoming students to engage with faculty and staff, see where they will live, make social connections with peers, and get a better sense of our academic experience and the resources we offer. These sessions are among my favorite because of the cross-campus participation of so many in our community, as well as the opportunity to celebrate the best of Wittenberg.

Under sunny, blue skies, Wittenberg conducted the 171st Commencement exercises in two separate, in-person ceremonies to celebrate the class of 2021 on May 15. To allow for social distancing, both ceremonies were held at Wittenberg Stadium. A long-awaited Commencement ceremony celebrating the class of 2020 was also held in the same location on May 16.
