Where intellectual engagement meets the human experience
To understand the world requires studying it in thoughtful, meaningful, and multidimensional ways. In Wittenberg's new School of Arts, Communication, and Cultural Foundations, faculty partner with students in interpreting different perspectives. They dissect the cultural forces that shape society and humanity, and they encourage critical thinking and creativity as they prepare students to influence and contribute to the global community.
Students in the School of Arts, Communication, and Cultural Foundations benefit from collaborative learning, compelling storytelling, and research beginning as early as the first year. Past topics explored have included fallen angels featured as part of ancient Jewish and Christian mythologies; the health humanities with a specific focus on narrative medicine, empathetic imagination, and historical concepts of health and care; the impact of religious sounds; immigration at the crossroads, and podcasts examining what makes a family, the stories not told on tour, or what makes Wittenberg, well, Wittenberg, among other areas.
Consistent with Wittenberg's broad-based, human-centered learning model, those majoring in the areas under the School of Arts, Communication, and Cultural Foundations' umbrella will intersect with students in and outside the school as all students take courses across all four schools, ensuring that each student is prepared for any field or pursuit. Such interaction between students and with faculty representing a range of disciplines also creates opportunities for exciting new courses, giving graduates a greater competitive advantage in the world outside of Wittenberg.
Travis Proctor, associate professor of religion, serves as the Dean of the School of Arts, Communication, and Cultural Foundations. Proctor specializes in religions of the ancient Mediterranean, with a focus on histories of Christian cultures in the ancient world (ca. 50-500 CE). His Ghost Tours during the Halloween season have also proved popular.
